Family Egg Drop

McGee Elementary is strengthening partnership activities that support student learning. The Family Egg Drop was added to STEM night to guide student and parent interactions at home that are, then, shared with others at school.

Students and parents researched and brainstormed ways to design “containers” to protect a raw egg from breaking when dropped from a height of 12 feet. They considered Newton’s laws of motion, concepts of force, ways to reduce acceleration, and materials for padding or for “bounce-ability” to protect an egg. In some families, one child worked with mom and the other with dad.  They used toothpicks, straws, cotton balls, balloons, string, and common items.  Then, they brought their devices to the Egg Drop station at STEM night.

A farmer donated eggs for STEM night, and many community partners and volunteers participated. Teachers guided the activity in class and conducted the Egg Drop competition. Students turned fun egg facts into posters that were hung at the Egg Drop station. The custodial staff assisted with a ladder, seats for viewing the Egg Drop at a safe distance, and clean up. The Family Egg Drop was an enjoyable learning activity that brought STEM night to life.
