Meet a challenge to involve more families
Reach results for students success in school

Lets Get Everyone Involved

Frasch Elementary School experienced two years of COVID restrictions, a hurricane, and other serious storms. Parents could not come to meetings and activities at school. The Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) and teachers designed a series of three “send home” projects for students and parents to do together that spotlighted students’ skills in language arts, math, and family history. The projects were introduced to students in class. They took home needed materials and an invitation for parents to participate with their child at home.

  1. “You are YOUnique” was a snowflake that students and a family partner decorated to show something unique about the family. Students decorated snowflakes with pictures, glitter, paint, and other materials. Over 350 snowflakes created a lovely storm in the school hall!
  2. “100 days of Fun” focused on the number “100.” The challenge was to color, draw, or create a collage that made “100” meaningful to the student and family. Students selected themes such as goldfish, bugs, and other things that were 100-times-fun for their family.
  3. “Bloom Where You Are Planted” asked students and parents to discuss how the student had grown during the school year. Students wrote their stories on different flowers at each grade level. They were excited to share their successes for the year and think about the future.

The only challenge was a good one—not enough space to hang all projects in one hallway. The work was displayed throughout the school for students to see their own and classmates’ creations. More than 450 parents and other family partners, 75 teachers, 100 community members, and all students participated. Many students do not participate in family engagement activities if their parents cannot come to the school building. On these “send-home” projects, everyone really could get involved.
