The Stars of CBSA Red Carpet Affair

When COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, the Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) and school leaders at Stokes Preschool redesigned its end-of-year celebration from children performing and parents observing to a more interactive, whole-community activity. The activity recognizes students’ work and progress as they move to the next grade or move on to elementary school.

Students, families, and staff also support the community. As an end-of-year activity, each classroom donated a different cleaning supply (e.g., sponges, dish soap, towels, trash bags, brushes, etc.) to obtain tickets to attend the Stars of CBS. The children and families donated over 400 cleaning items for a non-profit organization that supports homeless families in the community.

Parts of the day were just for fun. Several community partners brought in face painters, a DJ, salsa instructors, photo booth,  and other additions. For the red-carpet affair, each child made a crown to wear and a musical instrument to play as they marched as a band. Children and parents learned salsa dancing and performed their new talent. They visited the professional photo booth during the celebration and recorded their participation on the red carpet. Parents participated in these activities and networked with other parents—delighted to be with teachers and other families in person.

Each classroom walked the red carpet so that each student was featured and celebrated for the year’s work. As a marching band, the children followed the neighboring Shaw High School Drum Line. More than 200 parents and about 50 teachers and community partners participated to celebrate student success. Parents, family members, staff, and others wrote their thanks for the joy-filled, joyful end-of-year activity.
